LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight — 15 Beginner Tips & Tricks

New to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight? Start here with 15 essential beginner tips, a first-things-to-do checklist, and common mistakes to avoid for a smooth start in Gotham City.

Welcome to Gotham City, rookie. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a massive open-world adventure packed with collectibles, unlockable characters, suits, vehicles, and secrets. Whether you have played LEGO games before or this is your first time suiting up, these 15 essential tips will set you on the right path from day one.

15 Essential Beginner Tips

01

Start with Caped Crusader Difficulty

When starting a new game, you have two difficulty options: Caped Crusader (Normal) and Dark Knight (Hard). Choose Caped Crusader for your first playthrough. Dark Knight mode removes the counter indicator and reduces stud rewards — it is designed for experienced players on New Game+. You can always replay chapters on a higher difficulty later.

02

Break Everything You See

This is rule number one of every LEGO game. Destroy all LEGO objects, smashing mailboxes, lampposts, crates, walls, and anything that glitters. Every destroyed object drops studs, and you will need millions of studs to unlock every character, suit, and vehicle for 100% completion. Make it a habit to leave no object intact.

03

Use Each Character's Unique Ability

Every character has special abilities that solve specific puzzles. Batman uses his grapple gun and batarangs. Gordon deploys a foam sprayer to create platforms. Robin uses a cable launcher to zipline between points. Catwoman cracks safes with her whip. Pay attention to ability prompts — if you are stuck, you are probably using the wrong character.

04

Collect Red Bricks ASAP

Red Bricks unlock permanent cheats and bonuses. Two are essential early on: Stud Magnet (attracts nearby studs automatically) and Extra Studs (doubles all stud pickup values). These two Red Bricks transform your farming efficiency. Check the Batcave computer to track which Red Bricks you have found and which remain hidden in Gotham.

05

Switch Characters in the Open World

You are not stuck with a single character while exploring Gotham. Press the character switch button (check your control mapping in settings) to swap between any unlocked hero at any time. This is critical for reaching ability-gated collectibles and solving open-world puzzles without having to fast travel back to the Batcave.

06

Fast Travel Early and Often

Gotham City is divided into multiple islands and districts. Unlock Bat-Signal fast travel points by approaching the large spotlights on rooftops. Activating a Bat-Signal unlocks that location as a fast travel point. Use the map to instantly jump between islands, which saves enormous amounts of travel time when chasing collectibles.

07

Do Not Ignore Side Activities

Gotham is under siege, and random crimes happen constantly. Stop muggings, break up gang fights, and foil robbery attempts whenever you see them. These events award upgrade resources, character tokens, and studs. They also contribute to your overall completion percentage. A quick detour to stop a crime is almost always worth the time.

08

The Batcave Is Your Hub

The Batcave is the central hub where you can view your progress, purchase upgrades, change suits, and inspect vehicles. Visit regularly to track your completion on suits, trophies, vehicles, and Red Bricks. The Batcave computer shows exactly what you have collected and what remains, helping you plan your next session efficiently.

09

Co-Op Makes the Game Better

Local split-screen co-op lets a second player drop in and out at any time. Two players can cover more ground, tackle two-player puzzles (marked with a special icon), and share the fun of discovering Gotham together. Each player can play as any unlocked character, so co-op effectively doubles your puzzle-solving options.

10

Use Free Play Mode After Each Chapter

After completing a story chapter for the first time, it becomes available in Free Play mode. Free Play lets you replay the chapter with any character you have unlocked, not just the story-assigned ones. This is how you reach ability-gated collectibles and Gold Bricks that were inaccessible during your first run. Do not stress about missing things on your first playthrough — Free Play has you covered.

11

Use Stud Multipliers

Once you unlock Red Brick multipliers, activate them immediately. Stud multipliers stack multiplicatively, not additively. For example, activating x2, x4, and x6 together gives you x48 studs (2 × 4 × 6). With all four multipliers active (x2, x4, x6, x8), you get an astonishing x384 stud multiplier. Farm for a few minutes and you will never worry about studs again.

12

Combat Tip: Counter Is King

In combat, watch for the flashing enemy icon above an attacker's head. Press the counter button (displayed on screen) at the right moment to parry and counterattack. Timing your counters builds the combo meter faster than mashing attack, and a high combo meter increases stud drops from defeated enemies. Master the counter early for smoother combat.

13

Explore Gotham Between Missions

Do not fast travel directly from one story mission to the next without exploring. Gotham is filled with hidden collectibles, including Gold Bricks, character tokens, suit tokens, vehicle tokens, and Red Bricks. Use your grapple to reach high vantage points and look around — the gleam of a collectible is often visible from above.

14

Save Your Money

The Batcave vendor offers dozens of suits, vehicles, and upgrades for purchase. Resist the urge to buy expensive cosmetic suits early on. Instead, prioritize skill upgrades (health, combat damage, grapple range) and vehicle purchases (faster traversal helps exploration). Cosmetic suits can wait until you have established a steady stream of stud income.

15

Do Not Worry About Missable Achievements

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is designed to be completely replayable. Every chapter is available in Free Play mode, all collectibles are accessible after the story, and nothing is permanently missable. Relax and enjoy the story on your first run. You can clean up everything later without worrying about starting a new save file.

First 10 Things To Do

Just booted up the game? Here is your priority checklist for the first hour of play:

  1. Complete the tutorial prologue — Learn the basics of movement, combat, and character abilities.
  2. Visit the Batcave — Familiarize yourself with the hub. Check the computer, suit station, and vehicle bay.
  3. Unlock your first fast travel point — Find a Bat-Signal rooftop and activate it to mark fast travel on your map.
  4. Smash everything in sight — Build up your stud count. Destroy every LEGO object you encounter in the first area.
  5. Find your first Red Brick — Prioritize Stud Magnet or Extra Studs. Check the Batcave computer for hints on locations.
  6. Stop a random crime — Interrupt any criminal activity you see on the streets for bonus studs and resources.
  7. Purchase your first skill upgrade — Improve health or combat damage before spending on cosmetic items.
  8. Experiment with character switching — Swap between Batman, Gordon, and Robin to understand their unique abilities.
  9. Complete story chapter 1 — Progress through the first story mission to unlock Free Play for that chapter.
  10. Set up co-op (optional) — If playing with a friend, have Player 2 press start to drop in. Co-op doubles your efficiency!

Common Mistakes Beginners Make

Skipping Side Activities

Many new players beeline from story mission to story mission, ignoring the crimes and random events happening in Gotham. This is a mistake. Side activities provide a steady stream of studs, character tokens, and upgrade resources. They also break up the pacing and make the open world feel alive. Take five minutes between missions to clean up the streets.

Wasting Studs on Cosmetic Suits Early

The Batcave vendor has a dazzling array of suits, and it is tempting to grab your favourites immediately. But expensive suits (often 250,000+ studs) are purely cosmetic. New players who blow their studs on suits early find themselves short when they need to purchase essential skill upgrades or vehicles. Prioritise function over fashion for the first several hours.

Ignoring the Counter Mechanic

LEGO Batman's combat rewards timing over button mashing. Beginners who ignore the counter prompt and just hammer the attack button will take unnecessary damage and build the combo meter slowly. Learning to counter early makes combat significantly easier and more rewarding. The flashing enemy icon is your friend — do not ignore it.

Forgetting to Switch Characters

A common frustration for newcomers: encountering an obstacle they cannot pass and assuming it is locked behind a later story unlock. In most cases, you just need to switch to the right character. Gordon's foam sprayer, Robin's cable launcher, and Catwoman's whip each open different paths. If you are stuck, try all your unlocked characters before giving up.

Not Using Free Play Mode

After finishing a chapter in story mode, some players never revisit it. This means missing out on dozens of collectibles that require Free Play mode to access. Always replay each chapter in Free Play after completing it, using characters with abilities that were not available during the story run. This is how you reach 100% completion.

Neglecting the Batcave Computer

The Batcave computer tracks every collectible, Red Brick, and unlockable in the game. Beginners who do not check it are flying blind. Make it a habit to visit the Batcave after each story chapter to review your progress, identify gaps, and plan your next collection run. The computer also shows hints for Red Brick locations, saving you hours of aimless searching.

With these tips in mind, you are ready to take on Gotham. Remember: break everything, switch characters often, use Free Play, and never worry about missing something permanently. The Dark Knight's legacy is yours to write. Good luck!
